Phillip Randall Billington, age 97, of Crossville, TN, passed away on, May 9, 2025. He was born on, January 19, 1928, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, son of the late Elmer Laverne Billington and Ardith Verena (Bridges) Billington.
Phillip was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and beloved friend to many.
Phillip served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, a testament to his service and sacrifice.
His career was nothing short of extraordinary. As a physicist in the aerospace industry, he contributed groundbreaking work that forever changed our understanding of space. He was one of the many engineers involves the Ranger 7 mission, which captured the first close-up images of the Moon--a milestone in space exploration. He also invented the Star Tracker, a device that revolutionized infrared astronomy and navigational technology, further cementing his legacy as a pioneer and innovator.
Beyond his professional achievements, Phillip was a man of many words, wisdom, and warmth. He loved sharing stories of his work, the stars, and the universe. But more than anything, he loved his family. He lived a whole life raising four children, though he lost his beloved son, Scott at the age of 18, he is survived by his children, Debbie (Dan) Davenport, Randy (Cathy) Billington, and Carolyn (Bob) Harper, and cherished by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, Neil Billington, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wanda; his son, Scott Billington; brother, Allen Billington and sister, Marianne Billington Davis.
A Funeral Service will be held at Bilbrey Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:00 PM. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
