James Windell Kennedy

James Windell Kennedy, 82, of Crossville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026.

Born on October 18, 1943, in Chestnut Ridge, Tennessee, James was the son of Dillard and Sallie (Taylor) Kennedy. He spent his career as a dedicated Hi-Lo Driver for Detroit Diesel, where he was known for his steady work ethic and quiet reliability.

James was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan, known to cheer them on loudly and critique them even louder. Win or lose, he stuck with them like only the most loyal (and stubborn) fans do. At home, he found joy in the simple, steady rhythms of country life—sitting on his porch watching hummingbirds dart and hover, riding his four-wheeler through familiar trails, and spending crisp mornings hunting deer, turkey, and squirrel. These were the moments that grounded him, the ones he cherished most.

James is survived by his loving wife, Debra Lynn (Evans) Kennedy; his daughter, Regina Berman; and his son, Avery Kennedy. He also leaves behind his nephews, Teddy (Tammy) Aytes and Ronnie (Cheryl) Kennedy; his nieces, Patty (Ronnie) Abner, Anna Rains, and Marcia Brown; his cousin, Vellamae Ashburn; his good friend, Richard Cox; and many others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dillard and Sallie Kennedy.

A memorial service honoring James’s life will be held at Adams Hill, with details to be announced at a later date.
